Past and present role of the Indian-fig prickly-pear (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller, Cactaceae) in the agriculture of sicily

1992

Of prickly-pear cacti occurring in Sicily, the most widespread and economically important is Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller. In Sicily it has, since its introduction, played an important role in the exploitation of marginal areas. The Sicilian experience is described with reference to the historical outlines and the present intensive production of late fruit. Information on historical and actual uses of the plant and its products (flowers, cladodes, fruits) is given.

Speaking Back to the Murder State: Gertrude Bonnin’s California Writings and the “Little Matter of Genocide”

2017

Niniejszy artykuł zestawia książkę historyczną na temat dziejów stanu Kalifornia z połowy dziewiętnastego wieku pt. Murder State (2012 r.) autorstwa Brendana C. Lindseya z piśmiennictwem Gertrudy Bonnin dotyczącym Indian kalifornijskich opublikowanym w San Francisco Bulletin w 1922 r. B.C.

Panoramic radiographic study of mental foramen in selected dravidians of south Indian population: A hospital based study

2015

Background: This study aimed at documenting information on appearance, size, horizontal and vertical locations of Mental Foramen (MF) in Panoramic Radiograph. We also analyzed the age and gender differences with radiographic appearance and location of MF. We evaluated these findings in our population and co-relate with results of previous studies. Material and Methods: 1662 panoramic radiographs were evaluated, of which 245 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Each radiograph was traced to record the horizontal and vertical locations. The size of MF was recorded using digital caliper and its appearance was determined by visual examination. Chi-square and t-test were employed. Results: The most…

‘Without form, how can there be beauty?' (A Passage to India) : dernières inversions de l'écriture devant la forme impossible du décor chez E. M. For…

2008

2020

This survey aims to present an initial assessment of the incidence of the phenomenon of witch-hunting in India during 2020, at a particularly dramatic historical moment marked by the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic. The data are partial, but indicative, and have been gathered through daily monitoring of the main Indian newspapers in English and some newspapers (national and local) in Hindi. In India, the belief in witches is a phenomenon that is linked to specific elements both of Hindu cults, whose devotional expressions and folkloric elements are rooted in the Vedic texts, and the belief systems of some indigenous communities. Indeed, although influenced by the expressions of the Hindu …

Transmission bottlenecks and the evolution of fitness in rapidly evolving RNA viruses

2003

We explored the evolutionary importance of two factors in the adaptation of RNA viruses to their cellular hosts, size of viral inoculum used to initiate a new infection, and mode of transmission (horizontal versus vertical). Transmission bottlenecks should occur in natural populations of viruses and their profound effects on viral adaptation have been previously documented. However, the role of transmission mode has not received the same attention. Here we used a factorial experimental design to test the combined effects of inoculum (bottleneck) size and mode of transmission in evolution of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) in tissue culture, and compared our results to the predictions of a …

Ten millennia of hepatitis B virus evolution

2021

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been infecting humans for millennia and remains a global health problem, but its past diversity and dispersal routes are largely unknown. We generated HBV genomic data from 137 Eurasians and Native Americans dated between ~10,500 and ~400 years ago. We date the most recent common ancestor of all HBV lineages to between ~20,000 and 12,000 years ago, with the virus present in European and South American hunter-gatherers during the early Holocene. After the European Neolithic transition, Mesolithic HBV strains were replaced by a lineage likely disseminated by early farmers that prevailed throughout western Eurasia for ~4000 years, declining around the end of the 2nd…
